its everywhere

I think I am a fan of Twilight, and no matter how hard I try to resist it, because I do not want to be attached to something right now, it seems like I can't. Well, there are many factors why I am drawn to it; and one factor that has a great impact on the way I behave (and many girls behave) is the great communication strategy that the promoter of Twilight used.

No doubt, the strategies that they used for Twilight is effective. Many girls around the world are now desiring to be bitten by Rob Pattinson.

In this scene, we could see how powerful communication specialists could be. This, I think should be an example for all of us who are taking up communication courses. I know it is a movie, but promoting a message, a company, or a product is not different to this. The aim is to learn from this and apply it to the different fields of orgcomm.

If I could just be (with) Edward Cullen

I watched twilight out of curiosity. I need to know why teenagers are having the twilight fever and the edward syndrome. after all, I can't read minds like edward.

I appreciated the movie very well. In fact, after watching the last full show of twilight, I immidiately started reading the book. In spite of this behavior, I can't say that I'm completely crazy about it because there are some parts of the story, book, and movie that I am critical about. However, I fell in love with Edward Cullen, and no matter how hard I try not to have the edward syndrome, I have already acquired it.(Maybe it's the smile...no...it would have to be the eyes). Yes! It's his eyes that caught me.

Okay.

Now that I have established why I like Edward, I just realized another reason why I can't get enough of this creature. He has something that I wish I had, and that is the ability to read minds. I don't want this for personal agenda only, but for being an orgcomm student as well. In all the things that we create in orgcomm, the starting point is always a research. We always have to asses every detail of the current situation. Moreover, the objective of whatever we do always pertains to what the audience's needs, wants or whatever they respond to. We need to see through the minds of our audience in order to know what we will do for them and how will we do it right.

Research is a crucial process that we all have to conduct. I just thought that if we were like edward cullen, who could read minds, it wouldn't be hard for us to create communication materials for the benefit of our audience. On second thought, the challenge of getting it right would be gone; so I think, I would settle being WITH Edward, rather than being him (hahah!)

ms.communication

I really hate it when people do not pay attention to what one says either through text, call, letter or whatever form of communication. This becomes the cause of miscommunication.

One might say that I am too particular or overdramatic about the matter. Well, I wouldn't be if I haven't experienced it. In fact, it happened to me many times. Moreover, if people wil continue this kind of attitude of not paying attention, they might cause a major disaster.

I am not only saying this because I am a communications major, but also because, as a part of a society, I could see that many people are talking and only few are listening. We all just think about ourselves all the time and this reflects on the way we communicate with other people.

I think that to make the world a better place, and to cultivate our relationships with one another, we should take time to pay attention.

Bittersweets and Orgcomm Stuff

I will be graduating next term.

Looking back at my college life, it seemed so fast, but when I was right there at those times when there are tons of work to do, days just seemed to be so slow. However, no matter how fast or slow college life has been, I wouldn't mind doing it all over again. It is fun and definitely enriching. In fact, I am proud of myself. Even though I don't have the highest CGPA, I am happy, because I know I've learned.

Taking up organizational communication made a huge impact on the way I see things. Every time I come across something related to communication, arts, and the media, I look at it in a certain perspective: the perspective of an orgcomm student. There are many ways to perceive the world, and the orgcomm perspective is just one of them. I didn't acquire this way of thinking overnight, I acquired this from the numerous readings that were tasked to us, the numerous activities that were assigned to us, and the mind boggling analytical questions that was thrown to us. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ranting, I'm just stating a fact. In addition, I am thankful to have undergone all these things.

Having this course made me realize another thing. I learned what Ms. Diaz used to tell us in THEORYO--discipline. I might be cranky and kinky most of the time, but when it comes to "orgcomm stuff", I know what I should do and how I should do it.

I don't see graduation as an end of learning orgcomm stuff. I see it as a bridge. Something that would connect me to another arena where I would learn more orgcomm stuff. This arena is what we all call as work!

What if....

Last Saturday we had a Personal Effectiveness Seminar for our careers. In the interview simulation, we were asked a question that really made me think as an orgcomm student. The question was asked to the whole class, but not everyone was given the chance to answer it because of time constraints.
The question was “What would you rather lose; you’re sense of sight or sense of hearing?” The immediate answer that came to my mind was to lose my sense of hearing rather than my sight, but on the second thought, hearing is equally important. I know it because I have experienced it. We had an activity in one of my classes wherein I was tasked to listen to an mp3 while we were building a tower out of playing cards. Other group members were also tasked to temporarily disable one of their senses. I thought that my task would be easy, but I was wrong. It was definitely difficult. I almost could not do anything. Even though I could see them, I could not exactly follow what they were doing. I could not hear the instructions. I was lost.
This made me realize how important all the senses are and how essential it is to my course. As an orgcomm student, I have been and will be dealing with communication. This question made me think what I would do if one of my senses will be lost. How will I perform the things I have learned if I would not be complete? How would I be an effective orgcomm practitioner? How would I experience life wholly?
Indeed, all the senses are important, but I had a second realization. I figured that whatever sense I lost, I should not lose hope. I could still compromise and make the most out of what is left. After all, I am an orgcomm student, I have been through a lot in this program, and I think I could face problems like this.

sex talk

Communication could be very sexist.

Everyday we see different forms of communication wherein either the males or the females

Everyday we see different forms of communication wherein either the females or males (yes communication could be harsh to men too) are being belittled vulgarly or not. However, it is sad to say that this happens to women more often.
Women, most of the time, are the ones who are being violated by communication. In fact, I think, many forms or things related to communication favor the men. For example, the word ‘history’, why does it have to be ‘history’? I wonder why they did not make it ‘herstory’ or ‘hirstory’. In this way, the word would not be sexist. I know that the ‘his’ in this word pertains to humankind, and I do not have anything against this word, but I just think that it would be better if words do not have any biases.
I remember that even Veronica and Betty in Archie comics are talking about these biases in language. They were wondering why foods are given male names, such as chicken ala king. When I came across that, different words came rushing to my head; and I realized that yes, many words are in fact patriarchal.
This is not my main concern though, I am more concerned with the forms of communication that reduce women into mere objects. It seems that it has been a custom for communicators to use women as a tool in communication. In addition, women are marginalized by the different kinds of communication.
Communication should not be biased or should not be used in any form that would hurt people, whatever gender they have. Communication should be used in promoting, developing and bridging gaps between people.

No Hands

A company without orgcomm practitioners is like a person without any hands. This is how important an orgcomm practitioner is. Orgcomm practitioners are the ‘creators’ in the company. They are the ones who generate ideas, plans, and processes that would start, continue and improve the operations of an organization.
Aside from being ‘creators’ orgcomm practitioners manage one of the most important factors of a company—communications. Orgcomm practitioners manage internal and external communications of the company. This is crucial because the operations of the company use and are based on communications. Orgcomm practitioners make sure that this fundamental aspect of the organization is well controlled.
Without orgcomm practitioners, companies will have a hard time implementing, informing, advocating, promoting and handling all the areas of the company.
